North Shore is 44-1 since 2018 and undefeated this season. In the last four weeks, they’ve played four teams that we have had ranked in our Top 25 at some point in the year, and they beat them by a combined 207-49. They are most people’s pick to win it all, with a few favoring Duncanville. To advance in the playoffs to keep the drive alive to win their third consecutive state title, they had to get past our #4 ranked Katy Tompkins.
Tompkins has had a great year. They beat Katy midway through the season, 24-19, ending their 75 game win game in district play. After the Katy win, they have been in everyone’s top 5 rankings in 6A. They just beat Cypress-Fairbanks, 51-28, and looked like they might be able to give the Mustangs of North Shore a battle.
Mustangs Quarterback Demetrius Davis completed his first 8 passes of the game and North Shore jumped all over Tompkins in the first half. Shadrach Banks had two first-half touchdown catches, for 28 and 80 yards that gave North Shore a commanding 26-7 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Tompkins’ Marquis Shoulders, who had their only first-half score, ran a kickoff back 76 yards for a touchdown. Then, early in the 4th quarter, he scored on an 85-yard run to cut the lead to 22-32. The two-point conversation failed. Davis went on to score on touchdowns runs on consecutive drives for the Mustangs to clinch the game, 47-22.
Davis finished the game with 302 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. He added 84 yards rushing and 4 rushing touchdowns. This put Davis over 3,000 yards passing for the season for the second time in his high school career.
Shadrach Banks caught 11 passes for 251 yards and 2 touchdowns for North Shore.
Marquis Shoulders ran for 153 yards for Tompkins and 2 touchdowns and added a third touchdown with the 76-yard kickoff return.
North Shore will face the Fort Bend Ridge Point Panthers next who beat the slightly favored Humble Atascocita, 55-45. The Panthers got the season off to an 0-2 start but have since won 8 straight.
