Quinn Ewers, the #1 ranked player in ESPN’s Top 300 and Texas Longhorns commit, got his Junior season off to a great start. Ewers was 21-27 for 388 yards and 5 touchdowns as he led the #7 team in Texas, the Southlake Carroll Dragons, to a 72-57 win over Rockwall-Heath. With the 5 touchdown performance, Ewers has now thrown for 50 touchdowns already in his high school career. He threw for over 4,000 yards and 45 touchdowns last year.
Southlake Carroll looked unstoppable on offense, totaling 72 points. They found themselves up 20-0 in the first quarter, however, the Dragons struggled on defense in this first game of the season. The Rockwall-Heath Hawks battled back. Head Coach Mike Spradlin has the Hawks playing great on offense. They were coming off of a 72 point performance in week one against Lewisville. Putting up 57 against Southlake-Carroll is impressive and the Hawks should improve on their 5-5 season from last year. But 57 was not enough to beat Ewers and the Dragons.
The Dragons have a tough schedule coming up. They travel to play #12 Rockwall this week and then host #16 Denton Guyer. Their defense will have to step up in those games if they want to have another undefeated regular season. With Ewers at QB, the Dragons will have a strong chance at making a deep playoff run this year as they try to claim the school’s 9th state title.
