16-Year-Old Player Killed
Tragedy has struck Fort Worth Southwest High School as 16-year-old student Tavion Swindell was fatally shot in a domestic violence incident. Swindell succumbed to a chest gunshot wound at a Crowley hospital on Sunday afternoon, with police reporting the incident stemmed from a dispute over video games.
In connection with the crime, 35-year-old Deevan Jones was arrested on Monday and charged with murder and tampering with evidence. He is currently held on a $260,000 bond.
Following the heartbreaking news, Fort Worth ISD canceled a scheduled scrimmage set for Thursday. The Southwest Raiders were to face Heights at Farrington Field at 7:30 p.m. To support students during this difficult time, the district announced that crisis counselors would be available on campus.
Swindell, in his first year playing for the team, was listed on Southwest High School’s 2024 roster. The school had just started its academic year on August 13. Southwest’s football season is scheduled to kick off on August 30 at 7:30 p.m. against Adams.
