2021 Team Preview: Windthorst Trojans

Windthorst Trojans

Head Coach: Chris Tackett (10th season as head coach)

Class: 2A Division II

District: 7-2A Division II

Windthorst pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Texas high school football history as it denied Mart a fourth straight title in a 22-21 instant classic in the 2020 2A Division II State Title Game. With Windthorst down 21-14, quarterback Cy Belcher scored on a quarterback keeper with just 26 seconds left, but Windthorst missed the ensuing extra point. However, an offside penalty against Mart on the kick gifted the Trojans a second chance. They took full advantage as running back Ethan Belcher converted the two-point conversion on a direct snap to give Windthorst its third-ever state title in unforgettable fashion.

2020 Season Recap

It was nearly a perfect season for the Trojans with a 14-0 defeat to Hamlin in their final non-district game the only blemish on their 15-1 record. The Trojan defense was dominant all year long, allowing just 11.3 points per game. Its most impressive performances might’ve come in its last two games as it shut out Wellington in a 7-0 slugfest in the state semifinals and held a potent Mart offense to just 21 points in the title game.

2021 Player Spotlight

Senior Offensive Lineman Eddie Llamas: 5’9” 230 lbs.

With Windthorst graduating much of its skill position players from last season, the Trojans will be glad to have Llamas back to lead the way on the offensive line. He earned the district’s Offensive Lineman of the Year award for his play at right guard and was also a force on defense with 51 total tackles, including six for loss, from his defensive tackle position.

2021 Season Preview

After graduating its starting quarterback, running back and two leading receivers from last year, Windthorst will value the experience it has returning in the trenches. Llamas and fellow seniors Jayden Friddle and Adrian Larios are all back to anchor the offensive line. Out wide, Hunter Herndon (208 receiving yards and two touchdowns) will look to step up in the void at receiver. Friddle (44 tackles; 12 TFL), Larios (53 tackles), and Llamos will be threats on the defensive line as well, while Zane Hackley (3 INTs) and Gage Lindley (63 tackles) will be looked upon as leaders in the secondary.

Games to Watch: Windthorst’s non-district opponents are identical to last year’s, meaning a rematch at Hamlin (Oct. 1) is in the cards. Its showdown at Muenster (Oct. 15) to open district play could well decide the district title.
