2025 District 15-6A Season Preview

From top to bottom, there is quality across District 15-6A. Six of its nine teams finished 2024 at .500 or better.

It will be fun to watch the competition for both the four playoff spots and the district title. Last year, Klein Cain took home the crown on a tiebreaker over Tomball.

Here’s what to watch for in District 15-6A in 2025.

Klein Bearkats

Head Coach: Nick Codutti (1st season)

Last Season: 6-4; 4-4 in district

Returning Lettermen: 25 (5 returning starters on offense; 7 on defense)

Klein Key Players and Storylines

Klein came up just one game short of its first playoff berth since 2018 a year ago.

Now, Nick Codutti takes over for the Bearkats, looking to get them over that hump. He had been at Fulshear the past four seasons, taking the Chargers to the postseason all four years.

He has a group with a good amount of experience this year with 12 returning starters.

The offense has a good foundation with returning quarterback junior Carter Latelle (1,820 passing yards and 16 TDs) and explosive running back EJ Kelly Jr (1,700 rushing yards and 21 TDs), who can burn you with his breakaway speed.


They’ll have quite the protection up front with four-star tackle Nicolas Robertson and his 6’3″, 335-pound frame. He should give Latelle time to find guys like senior Torrey Paul, who led the Bearkats in receiving yards last year.

Opposing offensive lines will have to be weary of outside linebacker Chase Battles, a dynamic athlete off the edge, and defensive tackle Trenton Marshall, who has a high motor in the trenches.

Inside linebacker Elijah Vaesa is another player that will have his name called a lot this year. He has a knack of coming down hill to make important tackles.

Codutti and his staff will be installing new offensive and defensive systems, but the Bearkats “have a strong determination and drive to be great.” Codutti believes those traits will be key as Klein looks to build a winning culture and snap that seven-year playoff drought.

Klein Cain Hurricanes

Head Coach: James Clancy (8th season; 52-27 record)

Last Season: 9-2; 7-1 (Lost to Cypress Ranch in bi-district)

Returning Lettermen: 43 (5 returning starters on offense; 2 on defense)

Klein Cain Key Players and Storylines

Klein Cain has a lot of varsity experience back on its roster but several of those players will be stepping into starting roles for the first time.

The Hurricanes head into 2025 with an “unproven offensive line,” but there’s no questioning the skill talent that will surround it. Running back Jah’Rin Louis (575 rushing yards and two TDs) and receiver Max Yates (373 receiving yards and two TDs) are ready to lead their respective positions after serving as number two options last season.

The Hurricane coaching staff is also excited to see what junior running back EJ Johnson can do. He averaged 6.7 yards per carry in limited reps in 2024.

All three of those guys will have a familiar face getting them the ball with quarterback Zach Johnson (2,520 passing yards and 24 TDs) back to man the helm. He’ll rely on senior Nash Leingang to lead that inexperienced offensive line in front of him.

Defensive tackle Braden Nwoko (37 tackles, ten TFLs) will be the anchor of what should be a strong interior of the defensive line. Safety AJ Craft is Klein Cain’s leading returning tackler (54 tackles, one INT). His experience will be vital in a secondary that lacks other returning starters.

Klein Cain has made the playoffs in each of the past six seasons. Expectations will be just as high this year as the Hurricanes look to make their impact felt in District 15-6A.

Klein Collins Tigers

Head Coach: Adrian Mitchell (8th season; 58-24 record)

Last Season: 7-6; 5-3 in district (Lost to Longview in regional semifinals)

Returning Lettermen: 24 (6 returning starters on offense; 6 on defense)

Klein Collins Key Players and Storylines

Klein Collins finished the 2024 regular season just 5-5, but the Tigers caught fire at the right time and made a run all the way to the third round of playoffs. It was their furthest playoff run since 2019.

Six starters return on both sides of the ball, including the heart of the Tiger offense. Dual threat quarterback Braydon Schoggin (1,921 passing yards, 1,248 rushing yards and 34 TDs) will lead that unit behind center Eddie Lartigue, who is a perfect anchor for the offensive line with his strength at 6’3″ and 285 pounds.

Ty Finley is the player to watch at the skill positions. He’s got big play potential both carrying the ball and as a receiver (667 rushing yards, 246 receiving yards, and nine TDs).

Defensively, the Tigers get some key players back in the front seven with defensive lineman Ellis Rodgers and linebacker JD Brady (88 tackles). Both were second team all-district selections last year. Safety Christian Wilkerson (70 tackles) brings both “experience and enthusiasm” on the back end.

Head coach Adrian Mitchell said the way his team ended last year gives them a solid foundation to build on. If they can “minimize injuries and play together,” he believes they  can put together another strong campaign this fall.

Klein Forest Golden Eagles

Head Coach: Derrick Vaughn (3rd season; 6-14 record)

Last Season: 2-8; 1-7 in district

Klein Forest Key Players and Storylines

The Golden Eagles are ready for a fresh start after finishing with just one district win a year ago.

They do return the backbone of their offense this season with 6’4″ quarterback James Robinson, whose arm strength should help open up the Golden Eagle passing attack. It also helps to have a star receiver like Jakaree Jones to target. Jones had over 900 receiving yards last season.

However, he Golden Eagles won’t just be flying though this year. Running back Dejaune Etheridge will help to keep defenses honest with his “vision and power“.

6’3″, 285-pound tackle/guard Oscar Quintero is Klein Forest’s leader on the offensive line. He was a second team all-district selection last season.

Defensively, the Golden Eagle coaching staff is excited about the potential of 6’4″ linebacker John Henderson. In the secondary, Alijah Alexis can make things happen. He had a pair of pick-sixes a year ago.

Klein Forest returns a good amount firepower, especially offensively. With it being year three under head coach Derrick Vaughn, the Golden Eagles will expect to get back on an upward trajectory this season.

Klein Oak Panthers

Head Coach: Brandon Carpenter (5th season; 19-23 record)

Last Season: 6-5; 5-3 in district (Lost to Bridgeland in bi-district)

Klein Oak Key Players and Storylines

The Panthers made it back to the playoffs for the first time in three years last season, but they do have some star power to replace. Courtland Guillory is now at Oklahoma after being a jack-of-all trades for the Panthers last season.

The next stud is already in the pipeline with sophomore running back Micah Rhodes (934 rushing yards and ten touchdowns). He won’t have to carry the offense alone either. 6’3″ receiver Jonathan Craven will be a big target in the passing game, while 5’9″ Trey Robinson brings the speed to the Panthers’ aerial attack.

Defensively, the secondary has a number of players to watch with promising sophomore cornerback Antonio Dural, Northwestern State commit senior Harrison Carter, and Tomball Memorial transfer junior Jacob Bedizel.

Klein Oak’s leader though is found at linebacker with junior Zach Ruysenaars. He was a first team all-district selection last season.

After snapping their playoff drought last season, the Panthers will now look for a playoff win this year. The talent is there to do it with a number of promising players back with a year of experience under their belt.

Magnolia Bulldogs

Head Coach: Craig Martin (7th season; 42-25 record)

Last Season: 5-5; 4-4 in district

Magnolia Key Players and Storylines

Magnolia’s first-ever season playing 6A football was oh-so-close in finishing with a playoff berth. The Bulldogs had two of their district losses come by a combined four points.

Several of their key players return, and they’ll be eager to get that pit out of their stomachs.

The defense will be fierce, starting in the trenches. The Bulldogs have a strong pairing with defensive tackle Demond Perrino and defensive end Ayden Johnson (38 tackles, 10 TFLs).

Navy commit Tyler Covar and junior Ty Miller should make the linebacking corps the heart of the Bulldog defense. Both were first team all-district selections last year. Behind them, safety Tanner Covar, Tyler’s twin brother, is also a Navy commit, while nickel Max Lejsek (61 tackles and seven TFLs) is another reliable tackler in the middle of the field.

Offensively, the Bulldogs should benefit from junior quarterback Chase Lowery now having a year of experience under his belt. They also have a proven running back ready to take the lead in the backfield in fellow junior Cash Ferrell.

Magnolia will hang its hat on its defense this year with key players back at all three levels. With that experience and a backfield that has proven it can produce, the Bulldogs will expect to contend for the playoffs this season.

Magnolia West Mustangs

Head Coach: Ben McGehee (5th season; 26-20 record)

Last Season: 1-9; 0-8 in district

Magnolia West Key Players and Storylines

The Mustangs had made the playoffs in each of their first three years under head coach Ben McGehee, but they hit a speed bump in their first season in 6A last year.

They’ll turn to their defense to help them get back on the right track. They have a strong core at linebacker to lean on with Rylan Langley (105 total tackles), Luke Mattingly (56 tackles), and Matthew Tollenaere. Langley was their leading tackler last season.

Behind them, junior safety Dawson Campbell is a returning all-district player.

Offensively, the Mustangs will need to figure out who gets the keys to the car after graduating their quarterback, leading rusher, and leading receiver. One thing for sure is the protection 6’5″ tackle Salvador Reyna and 6’4″, 305-pound lineman Andreas Meier will provide.

The defense has the pieces in place to improve upon the 37 points per game it allowed last season. The main question marks are on the other side of the ball where the Mustangs will be looking for guys they can rely on to get the ball in the end zone throughout the season.

Tomball Cougars

Head Coach: Dave Handal (4th season; 26-12 record)

Last Season: 10-2; 7-1 in district (Lost to Willis in area round)

Returning Lettermen: 25 (6 returning starters on offense; 4 on defense)

Tomball Key Players and Storylines

Tomball fell just short of a district title last year on a tiebreaker to Klein Cain. However, its second place district finish was still its best district result since 1990.

The Cougar offense should pack a punch especially with its skill talent. Quarterback Jaxyn Faldyn (2,050 passing yards, 697 rushing yards, and 26 total TDs) is a “playmaker with his arm and legs.”

He’s got his number one receiver Hunter Rathke (659 receiving yards and six TDs) back. Sophomore running back Ian Thomas (221 rushing yards and two TDs) is a “dynamic threat” who is ready to step up after seeing some carries a year ago.

On the other side of the ball, linebacker Brady Schneider (136 tackles, eight TFLs) is great at reading the game and “dissecting an offense.” He and Henry Mulliner were Tomball’s two leading tacklers last year and should be quite the duo in the middle of the field.

Behind them, the Cougars will lean on Dayton Navy. He’ll be their premier “cover corner” with his ball skills.

Tomball has had a knack for peaking at the right time under Handal. He wants his guys to just focus on “getting better every practice and every game” this year, and he has confidence they’ll be in the mix for another playoff run.

Tomball Memorial Wildcats

Head Coach: Joe Dale Cary (2nd season; 4-6 record)

Last Season: 4-6; 3-5 in district

Tomball Memorial Key Players and Storylines

The Wildcats had no problem putting points on the board last year, averaging 35 points per game. They just struggled to slow down their opponents, allowing 36 points or more in seven of their eight district games.

Joe Dale Cary and his staff will need to find a new quarterback to lead that attack this season. There’s no question though who the number one target will be. Gavin Westerberg had a monster junior year and will be one of the top receiver in the district this season. Alongside him, fellow receiver Carter Hamilton (207 receiving yards and two touchdowns) will be looking to build on a promising sophomore season.

Defensively, the Wildcats have a two-headed monster at middle linebacker with seniors Donovan Wagner (98 tackles, ten TFLs) and Aidan Budsisz (59 tackles, 12 TFLs), who is sliding over from defensive end. Senior Jeremiah Flash (28 tackles) is Tomball Memorial’s leading returner in the secondary.

The Wildcats lost a number of key players from last year’s graduating class. They’ll need some new faces to step up in new places as they aim to get back in the playoff mix this season.
