New Head Coach Mark Schmid, formerly the coach for The Woodlands, has the War Eagles of Conroe Oak Ridge balling! They’ve already matched their win total from last season, a 2019 season that saw them go 3-7 after a 5-5 2018 season. This is shaping up to be a great rebound year for Oak Ridge.
Oak Ridge faced Humble on Thursday. The Humble Wildcats were coming into the game 2-0, with a 49-28 opening win against Channelview, and a 35-14 win at Cypress Springs. Coming off of a 10-3 season that saw the Wildcats make their first playoff appearance since 2010, the Wildcats have been looking like they might have a chance to advance a round or two in this year’s playoffs. Most had them as a strong favorite against Oak Ridge.
Oak Ridge came out on fire on defense. They scored twice off turnovers in the first two minutes to go up 14-0. Dexter Green intercepted a pass from Humble Quarterback Jeremiah Price Knott and returned it to the 20-yard line. Then, Jahron Jonas got the scoring started with a 15-yard touchdown run. With the ball back and down 7-0, the Wildcats snapped the ball into the endzone and the Eagles Jaylon Wyatt recovered it in the endzone for a touchdown. Up 14-0 two minutes into the game, Oak Ridge did not look back. Humble did get a great performance from running back X’Zavier Sidney, who rushed for 190 yards on 21 carries, but it was not enough to overcome the 14 point deficit.
Final Score: Oak Ridge 28 – Humble 17
Oak Ridge will host Montgomery on October 22nd as they look to start the season off 4-0. The Montgomery Bears are 1-2 on the season, coming off of a tough 55-52 loss to Crosby.
