Few teams in the state could light up scoreboards like Beeville Jones did last year, much less teams in South Texas.
The Trojans found the end zone 84 times last year, or seven times a game. They did it through the air with quarterback Justin Gomez finding an array of receivers, but most notably to senior Waydale Jones, who’s taking his talents to Wake Forest.
Beeville Jones went 9-3 on the season, falling to Sinton (55-45) in non-district, at Rockport-Fulton (29-24) in district and to powerhouse Liberty Hill (35-33) in the area round.
The Trojans operate a pro-style offense, and Gomez passed for 3,619 yards (329/game) and 44 touchdowns — 1,979 yards and 30 scores to Jones. They wrapped up the regular season with a 48-21 win at Pleasanton and then absolutely crushed Zapata, 62-13, in the bi-district round.
The Trojans return a plethora of talent from last year and could be geared up to break scoreboards this fall.
Key Losses
WR Waydale Jones, DE Demontario Anderson, WR Sean Crook
Jones was a first-team all-state receiver after catching 30 touchdown passes and nearly 2,000 yards. Cook was an all-district selection with 793 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.
Anderson was a first-team selection on a defense that loses a lot of seniors.
Key Returners
QB Justin Gomez, RB Paul Wessels, OG Jermayne Miller
Gomez was the district’s Offensive MVP after slinging the ball around for nearly 3,700 yards and 44 touchdowns with a 121.7 passer rating.
Wessels was a first-team all-district running back from a team that threw the ball 60 percent of the time. He rushed for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns.
The Trojans return four starting offensive linemen in tackles Jacob Perez and EJ Valdez and guards Jermayne Miller and Benji Barrera.
The Verdict
If there’s any glaring weak spots on Beeville Jones’ roster heading into 2017, it would be lack of experience at receiver and on defense. The Trojans graduate their top two pass catchers and lose seven other players who caught passes last year.
The receivers will need to learn on the job quickly as Gomez has what it takes to get the ball to them.
The 2017 season starts with two road game (Kingsville and Ingleside) before San Antonio Southside visits for the home opener Sept. 15.
The Trojans get Sinton and Floresville at home before opening District 15-4A DI at Somerset. Beeville looks to avenge it loss to Rockport-Fulton when the Pirates arrive on Oct. 27, and the regular season ends Nov. 10 at home against Pleasanton.
