5 Thoughts On The Texans In The Under Armour All-American Game

Any thoughts about K’Lavon Chaisson not living up to the hype should be banished forever

The North Shore product had three sacks against some of the best offensive tackle products in the nation. That ties the UA All-American Bowl record, and would be a feat in a regular game.

His stock went way up, even though it was already sky-high. Now the conversation surrounding Chaisson isn’t whether his frame will punish him an obnoxious amount at the next level or not, it’s how much muscle can be packed on him without damaging that ridiculous burst. He projects as a rush end in a 4-3 or as an OLB in a 3-4.

I would’ve loved to see what Kellen Mond could’ve done with San Antonio Reagan this year.

I’m not going to wax poetically about the dangers or inherent badness of any board or charter high school, even though it’s well within my rights and the rights of many others (coaches especially) to do so.

However, after watching Kellen Mond play in this game, I’m going to assume that many Rattler fans are looking at that loss to Laredo United early in the season and that playoff loss at Austin Westlake and wonder “what if.”

Avery Davis is just fine.

It’s an all-star game. They had a week to practice. They aren’t going to be hitting crisp passes to clean routes every single time. The short turnaround in these games affects offenses much more than defenses, and it definitely showed in nearly every single case.

It was thought that this would be the year that the offense strikes back. Many of the offensive linemen had been dominating in one on one drills and such, but it didn’t truly translate over to the game due to the lack of consistency the players had together.

Avery Davis can sling the rock, period, full stop. His struggles can be attributed to a lack of unification, something that won’t be an issue in college.

Marvin Wilson proved his worth.

It’s difficult to see how prospects from the smaller schools will turn out. I thought Wilson had a great game in nearly every single aspect of being a defensive lineman. His takeoff was great, his pass rushes actually generated pressure, and he was stalwart in the run game. It clearly isn’t something that’s just hype with Wilson, he’s for real.

All in all, no Texas prospect disappointed.

Every year, it seems like there’s one guy who you watch and you just know that he won’t pan out like many are hoping. For every single Texan this year, that wasn’t the case, at least not in the film I saw. All-star games like this are generally exhibitions of speed and guys just trying to make plays to the detriment of the team. I actually saw some pretty great teamwork on display yesterday, and it made it all worth it.
