Editor’s note: We will not be doing rankings this week, as we feel like rankings are useless once the playoffs start. Our four full-time writers will be picking the closest matchups in each region from each division in each classification. Here are our picks for 5A Division 1.
Region 1
Justin Northwest – II
Colleyville Heritage – II
Advantage: Push
Reasoning: Northwest and Heritage are very similar teams in terms of how they attack people. Northwest has the better record, but Heritage is battle-tested. This will be a really, really good game.
Region 2
Frisco Independence – IIII
Highland Park –
Advantage: Frisco Independence, 4 votes to 0
Reasoning: Oh man, we’re going to catch some hell for this one, huh. Highland Park isn’t exactly what they’ve been in the past, and Frisco Independence’s running game is not to be trifled with.
Region 3
Manvel – IIII
New Caney –
Advantage: Manvel, 4 votes to 0
Reasoning: Manvel is the closest thing to an unstoppable killing machine in 5A. Until next week’s matchup with Cedar Park, few are going to challenge them.
Region 4
Dripping Springs – I
Angleton – III
Advantage: Angleton, 3 votes to 1
Reasoning: Dripping Springs has a great record, but it’s been padded against weaker opponents. Angleton has much more significant wins and a much better loss in El Campo.
