Our “Game of the Week” did not disappoint. Southlake Carroll, led by Quinn Ewers, the #1 Junior player in the country according to ESPN, dropped their first game this year to the Rockwall Yellow Jackets, 44-42. It was the Dragon’s first non-district loss in over three years.
Early in the game, it looked like the Southlake Carroll Dragons would cruise to an easy win. They took a 21 point first-half lead. The Dragons scored touchdowns on their first four possessions to go up 28-7. Rockwall was able to cut the lead to 28-19 at the half. They kept their comeback going strong in the third quarter and took a brief 34-28 lead. But then, Ewers led the Dragons down the field and scored himself on a 8-yard run to take a 35-34 lead. The Yellow Jackets took the lead right back with a field goal from Ethan Spearman, making it 37-35. Each team would find the endzone one more time, and Rockwall held on for the two point win.
In the loss, Ewers threw for 326 yards and 3 touchdowns. Running back Owen Allen added 142 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. It was not enough. Braedyn Locke, a top-ranked quarterback himself, matched Ewers touchdown for touchdown and led his team to a 21 point comeback victory.
Southlake Carroll falls to 1-2 on the season. They host Denton Guyer next week. Rockwall is now 3-0 and will face Highland Park next week.
