Cypress Woods Key Players and Storylines
Cypress Woods finished just 4-6 a year ago, the fewest wins in a season the Wildcats have had since 2017.
Still, second-year head coach Jeremy Hickman saw the program make gains throughout last fall. He believes they’ve now established a “culture of toughness and competitiveness” that will serve them well this year.
Only eight starters return, so the Wildcats will have to combat some inexperience. However, they expect to be able to make inroads on the ground. Running back Cory McKenzie “will be the guy” for the offense after racking up 504 yards as a sophomore last year.
Starting quarterback is a question mark. Max Terral, who has been a two-year starter at tight end, is expected to compete for the position. If he’s given the nod, he’ll be able to lean on playmaking receiver Nico Tremusini (121 receiving yards and two touchdowns), the top returning pass-catcher from last year’s team.
Defensively, the front seven can pack some punch with impressive sophomore defensive end Kaden Midkiff (15 tackles, two sacks) and junior linebacker Brady Sheppard, “who has a knack for getting to the ball.” Safety Zach Nicholas (53 tackles) will be the quarterback of the defense as a three-year starter.

One of the biggest gaps the Wildcats have to address is on the offensive line. Despite that tall task of replacing 14 starters, Hickman isn’t blinking. He was an assistant on the inaugural Cy Woods teams that made the playoffs the first four seasons of the program’s existence from 2008-2011.
He knows the impact culture can make. And after a season where four of their district losses came by nine points or less, he hopes that the Wildcats’ behind the scenes work can make all the difference in 2026.
