Atascocita Key Players and Storylines

After 196 wins in 14 seasons at Atascocita, Craig Stump hung up his whistle over the offseason. Enter Kyle Coats. Coats is fresh off a 12-1 season where he led College Park to its first regional semifinal appearance in school history.

Now, he takes over an Atascocita program that finished just 6-5 a year ago, its fewest wins in a season since 2012. The Eagles will be stout in the trenches offensively with 6’3”, 275-pound senior Isaiah Smith and 6’3”, 300-pound senior Dominic Brown. Both were first team all-district selections a year ago.

The Eagles will have to replace a 2,000-yard passer and 1,500-yard rusher at quarterback as well as their starting running back, but they have a star in the making in do-it-all receiver Brian Manuel Jr. (1,059 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns) to lead the passing attack.

Defensively, the Eagles have a nest full of ballhawks. Cornerback Trenton Blaylock (29 tackles and two INTs) has great size and physicality at 6’1”, 175 pounds, while cornerback Josh Banks and safety Tavon Bolden (55 tackles and three INTs) are two more heavy hitters in the secondary. Up front, expect Jason Johnson (29 tackles, six sacks) to be a frequent visitor to opponents’ backfields at 6’4” and 280 pounds.

The Eagles will have to learn a brand new offense and defense under their new coaching staff, but they have the raw size and speed to hang with just about anyone in the state. Coats isn’t backing away from the expectations from a program that has made the playoffs 13 years in a row. He said he and his players are determined to bring back a state title to Atascocita.
