Kingwood Key Players and Storylines

After six seasons in Kingwood, Cale Melton made the jump north to take over at Montgomery Lake Creek. In his place comes Stacy Williams, who was most recently the defensive backs coach at The Woodlands.

It’s not an unfamiliar place. Williams was an assistant on the Mustang coaching staff from 2019-2021. He takes over an offense that has plenty of talent.

Gunslinging quarterback Landon Hinson (2,553 passing yards and 29 touchdowns) is the all-time leader in passing yards in Kingwood history, and Kye Wehby (1,013 receiving yards and six touchdowns) is a dynamic threat both at receiver and as a return man. On the offensive line, left tackle Kennedy Brown, a Texas A&M commit, will make a much-welcomed return. He missed six of the Mustangs’ ten games last year due to injury.

Defensively, the Mustangs’ strengths are concentrated in the front seven. 6’2”, 225-pound defensive end Gideon Colby (46 tackles, 16 TFLs) is a disruptive player, who is a three-year letterman for the Mustangs. Behind him at linebacker, the Mustangs did lose Texas commit Cade Haug to Katy, but it’s far from an empty cupboard. Colston Ferdows (70 tackles) is Kingwood’s leading returning tackler from 2025, while junior Gavin Womack will need to take a big leap to fill Haug’s shoes.

The biggest question mark is in the secondary. The Mustang coaching staff believes it’s a group with a ton of potential, but it will be led primarily by juniors and sophomores this season, so they’ll have to learn on the fly.

District 17-6A is a gauntlet, so the Mustangs will need to lean heavily on their 30+ seniors to lead the way, especially with a new coaching staff coming in. A fifth place finish was respectable a year ago, but this group will want more as they look to work towards their “North Star” of becoming a state championship-caliber program.
