Memorial Key Players and Storylines
The verdict is in: second-year Memorial head coach Brooks Haack is a proven winner. Not only did he lead the football team to its winningest season since 1982 last fall, but he also stepped in as interim head baseball coach this past spring.
The result? A run all the way to the state title game.
Texas baseball commit Grant Sperandio was a key part of that run, and he’ll be ready to contribute on the gridiron this fall. As Memorial’s starting quarterback last year, he threw for 1,909 yards and 24 touchdowns. He’s got weapons too. 6’0″, 190-pound senior running back Conrad Bennett (1,120 rushing yards and nine touchdowns) combines physicality with breakaway speed. Out at receiver, Myles Goebel (707 receiving yards and ten touchdowns) will keep secondaries on their toes with his “big play capabilities.”

Defensively, the Mustangs will be strongest at the back. Three-year starter safety Jackson Van Wie is a sure tackler while fellow safety Louis Baay (40 tackles, 13 PBUs) is great at playing the ball in the air. Up front, 6’2″, 245-pound defensive tackle Jacob Espinoza (50 tackles, 15 TFLs) will need to control the line of scrimmage.
The Mustangs may not be the biggest team, but they have experience in all the positions they’ll need it. They’ll compete in a new district as they join the Houston ISD and Alief ISD schools, but expectations haven’t changed. Haack and his staff expect this group to contend for a second straight district championship this fall.
