Stratford Key Players and Storylines

Stratford’s 5-7 record from last year may not look glamorous, but the Spartans did win a playoff game for the third-straight year.

They return just six total starters, but head coach Todd Rankin believes they have the talent to be just as strong if not stronger this season.

The passing attack should have time to operate with Power Four prospect Ty Greene shifting from defense to offensive tackle this season. On the other side of the line, sophomore tackle Marvin Alexander shined as a freshman last year in the playoffs and is ready for a full season as a starter.

Junior quarterback Matthew Selesky (587 passing yards) will be the one benefitting from that protection. He’s stepping into full-time action after throwing for eight touchdowns and just one interception in “mop-up time last year.”

On the other side of the ball, defensive end Callan Kirk (50 tackles, 15.5 TFLs) is both the leader of the defense and a force to be reckoned with off the edge. Linebacker Ben Roberts has plenty of playmaking ability as he slides over from fullback, while Colton Barber is an athletic safety that can hold down the fort on the back end.

The Spartans have some holes to fill, but they are looking forward to competing with the Houston ISD and Alief ISD schools in a new-look District 20-6A. Rankin has already set the bar high, challenging his team to go chase their first district title since 2015.
