Last Season: 0-10; 0-7 in district

Returning Lettermen: 20 (6 returning starters on offense; 6 on defense)

Cypress Park Key Players and Storylines

A 41-game losing streak hangs over Cypress Park like a cloud. The Tigers are eager to break that drought this season with 12 returning starters.

Now, they may have a new starting quarterback, but head coach Donald Lawrence is confident that his team will be better this year even without that experience behind center.

Running back Ja’Harvey Johnson (905 rushing yards and five touchdowns) is ready to be a workhorse again after leading the district with 195 carries last year. Junior tight end Brandon Sensente will help pave the way. He’s both a “strong run blocker and a big target with good hands.” Joining him in the passing game is receiver Dustin Monroe (132 receiving yards) who could be in store for a breakout season.

Defensively, the Tigers are strong in the secondary with safety Forkum Chesami (58 tackles), their “top overall player,” fellow safety Jashaud Fontenot (59 tackles), and “strong, physical” cornerback Lovell Iverson. Linebacker Kaden Watkins (34 tackles) will lead the middle of the field.

This year will be all about getting that elusive victory. Lawrence said he has preached about the program’s standards all offseason. The work has been done. Now, it’s time for the Tigers to try and go get that result on the field.
