Westlake opened the 2026 season with a statement, rallying past California power Inglewood 33-26 at Chaparral Stadium in Austin.

The Chaparrals trailed 14-11 at halftime and again entered the fourth quarter behind. Senior quarterback Patton Jones, making his first career start, helped turn the game around.

Jones accounted for three touchdowns, including two on the ground. His 12-yard rushing score tied the game at 26-26, setting up the decisive sequence.

After Westlake forced an Inglewood punt, Jones connected with Rhett Jenkins for a 51-yard gain that moved the Chaparrals inside the 10. C.J. Jones then powered in from four yards out to give Westlake a 33-26 lead with less than two minutes remaining.

Westlake’s defense finished it from there, with Colton Fromberg recording a key sack during Inglewood’s final possession.

The Chaparrals also got a huge special teams play earlier when Hank Fredenburg returned a blocked extra point the length of the field for two points.

Inglewood, which entered the matchup 1-0 after beating Los Alamitos 20-7, fell to 1-1. Westlake improved to 1-0 and will host Euless Trinity next week. Trinity opened its season with a 28-17 win over Berkner.

Inglewood next travels to Highland. Highland is coming off a 34-14 loss to Apple Valley.
