1A Team of the Week: Silverton Owls

For the past two seasons, Silverton has won just two games. The Owls got 2026 off on the right track with a 42-14 win over Dora, New Mexico in their opening game, but they faced a stiff test in week two.

The Owls welcomed in a Wellman-Union team that Dave Campbell’s Texas Football listed as a 21-point favorite.

It was exactly the type of night that would serve as a benchmark for the Owls’ program.

“Our coaches and players have worked hard to change the mindset from the past couple of years,” Silverton head coach Jeremy Holt said.  “Last season was about establishing a culture built around the idea that ‘How we do anything is how we do everything.’ We’re still learning what that means day to day, but the growth we’ve seen in these kids is something our whole staff is proud of.”

That growth was certainly evident on the field last Friday. Senior Slayton Cagle had a monster night, rushing for 276 yards and seven touchdowns as the Owls earned a statement upset victory over Wellman-Union 62-58.

Defensively, Cayden Smith finished with 13 tackles, Lucas Holt had seven, and Cain Naravaez and Kesler Barnes both came up with fumble recoveries.

With the win, the Owls improved to 2-0, a start that goes a long way towards confidence and momentum for the program.

“Matching our win total from each of the last two seasons in just two games says a lot about where this program is headed,” Holt said. “It’s early and we know there’s a long way to go, but it confirms that the foundation we’ve been building is real.”

Now, they’ll look to pull another upset this Friday when they face a major test against No. 9 Nazareth.
