2A Team of the Week: Sanford-Fritch Eagles

Sanford-Fritch was a 19-point underdog against Bovina this past week, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, and it looked like that prediction was going to come true. Bovina scored with 3:30 left on Friday to extend its lead to 20-8.

But at the most critical moment, the Eagles finally found their wings.

Sanford-Fritch first found the end zone with just over two minutes to go to cut the lead to 20-16. Then after recovering an onside kick, they marched down the field again and took the lead on a touchdown and two-point conversion with just 28 seconds left.

Bryce Wysong was a huge part of the comeback, rushing for 163 yards, a touchdown, and two two-point conversions. Ethan Barrett also had a successful two-point conversion in addition to 70 yards on 13 carries.

These boys have challenged themselves to not only be mentally tough but physically tough. Their mental toughness to keep fighting was a testament to the work they have put in for this season,” Sanford-Fritch head coach Brandon Bennett said. “I could not be more proud of a group of young men for their determination and grit.”

Noah Applegate was big on both sides of the ball with eight tackles defensively as well as 57 yards rushing. Barrett also had seven tackles and a fumble recovery on defense, while Wysong had an interception.

In all, Sanford-Fritch rushed for 314 yards on 52 carries. The Eagles now are 2-1 on the season. They’ll look to build off this victory this upcoming Friday when they host Friona.
