Having all 12 state title games at one site on the same week is great, until the last game of the night starts after 9 at night. Monday the UIL talked about moving the first game on Thursday to the last game on Wednesday, potentially cutting playoff teams.
The UIL will start holding all state title games on the same weekend at the same venue starting Wednesday afternoon. The Six-Man Division I and II games are the only two on Wednesday, forcing one day to have four games in one day later in the week starting at 10 in the morning and ending sometime around midnight.
The potential 2A game happening Wednesday night will not happen until at least 2017, so another long Thursday night will be in order this year.
The UIL is also considering San Antonio again for the host venue for the state championship games. The Alamodome will soon host the Final Four and will undergo renovations making it a more attractable site. The UIL will not commit to a set venue rotation in hopes of creating competitive pricing between the qualified venues.
“They’re not interested in it.” Deputy Director Dr. Jamie Harrison told reporters on the subject of reducing playoff teams.
In 38 days 704 teams will start the their march in hopes that it ends in December at AT&T Stadium. The UIL recently polled superintendents around the state about reducing the teams that make the playoffs, and the UIL said they got a resounding no to cutting back the teams.
