SAN ANTONIO – Bill Smith still lives in Aldine, visits the school and keeps up with the football program he made a household name in the 1990s.
He is Aldine – not just the high school, but the district as well. So, his induction into the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Hall of Honor on Wednesday is a win many were celebrating.
“This is an emotional day,” Smith said. “You spend your whole career trying to be the best you can be. For the association that you’re with to recognize you for that effort means a lot.”
Smith spent 29 years as Aldine’s coach. In 38 total years in the profession, he posted a record of 237-96-6 with 21 playoff appearances and 10 district titles. The year that stands above the rest is 1990 when Aldine won the Class 5A Division II state championship at 15-0 in one of the more noteworthy seasons ever.
Smith’s induction wasn’t just a chance for Aldine to celebrate. It was a chance to reminisce about a time when Houston’s high school football power brokers resided just 15 miles north of downtown.
