District 10-5A of southern DFW has some people believing that it might be the deepest in Texas. The district last year was represented by Mansfield Lake Ridge in the Class 5A Division I State Championship in Houston where they were humiliated 56-0 by Richmond George Ranch.
Despite that outcome, Mansfield Lake Ridge is still viewed as capable of returning to the playoffs. They should be competing with three other teams in the district including favorite Lancaster, Mansfield Timberview and Waxahachie. Those four have gotten all of the attention.
But the district has four other teams: Red Oak, Mansfield Summit, Mansfield Legacy and Midlothian. The preseason hype has allowed those four to fly under the radar because they are off to promising starts.
Red Oak lost in a tight one in their first game at home 13-7 against Corsicana, but they bounced back with two wins a row. Red Oak was able to withstand a 14-point fourth quarter by Arlington Heights thanks to a 23-yard field goal by kicker Edgar Perez to win 17-14 on the road on Sept. 2 Then they blew out Athens 42-21 thanks to three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown by senior quarterback Chris Bugg and three interceptions by sophomore cornerback Jacob Proche. Red Oak’s next game is 7:30 PM, Friday at Red Oak High School versus Mansfield Timberview.
Mansfield Summit lost in their first game 28-10 to the Mansfield Tigers which was highlighted by two rushing touchdowns by Tigers’ RB Kennedy Brooks. But the Jaguars responded by posting two consecutive shutouts. Mansfield Summit won 33-0 against Chisholm Trail Senior running back Derek Johnson had three rushing touchdowns in the game. They also won 27-0 over Paschal. Their next game is 7:30 PM, Friday at Mansfield Summit High School against Waxahachie.
Mansfield Legacy is also 2-1 and the main reason why is that they’ve scored 135 total points in their first three games of the season. That’s an average of 45 points in three games. They scored 41 points in their recent game at home against Aledo, but they also allowed 59 points in the game. But they were dominant in their first two games. They went to Rider and won 50-19. Senior quarterback Kendall Catalon passed for four touchdowns and ran for one, while senior running back Kameron Session rushed for two touchdowns and 152 yards. Session ran for 154 yards again in the Broncos’ 44-26 win over Crowley. Senior wide receiver Trent McDonald caught two touchdowns and senior outside linebacker Keaton Dennis had four tackles for loss. Their next game is against Midlothian.
The Panthers were seen by some as a sleeper to challenge for a playoff spot if the four favorites happened to slip. They were in Class 6A last year, but they have had a rough start in their first three games of Class 5A. The Panthers only mustered 16 points and 30 passing yards against Poteet who won 32-16. But the Panthers responded in their next game against Richardson with 52 points. They ran the ball often and successfully with 445 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. Then they lost by one to McKinney 36-35. Their next game is 7:30 PM, Friday at Midlothian High School against Mansfield Legacy.
Waxahachie has won their first two games while Lancaster and Lake Ridge are 2-1. Mansfield Timberview is 1-2.
