Cy Fair routed Langham Creek 56-28 in a glorified scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Cy Fair Federal Credit Union Stadium. The final regular season matchup between the Bobcats and the Lobos had no bearing on either squad’s playoff positioning. As a result, many starters on both sides saw limited reps. After a closely contested first half, Langham Creek called off the dogs and made way for Cy Fair to score 28 straight points coming out of halftime.
Cy Fair running back Trenton Kennedy had no problem running against Langham Creek’s starters or back ups. He looked to be in postseason form, rushing for 204 yards on 23 carries and scoring two touchdowns. Bobcats quarter back Cameron Arnold had a nice day as well, completing 10 of his 14 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Arnold’s favorite target was wide receiver BJ Chambers. Chambers reeled in three receptions for 63 yards and caught both of Arnold’s touchdown passes.
Cy Fair finished the year in second place in a top-heavy District 17-6A. The Bobcats 8-2 2016 campaign has earned them the right to keep playing on into November. Cy Fair head coach Ed Pustejovsky recognizes the solid, sustained effort he’s been able to get from his players.
“It’s a team that has worked hard from the start since the beginning of last November” Coach Pustejovsky said. “I think we have good senior leadership. Our kids understand that you have to work on a daily basis if you want to obtain the goals that you set.”
Hard work on behalf of both teams removed any drama heading into Saturday’s game. With playoff matches already determined, it appeared players and coaches were able to take a more fun and relaxed approach in the first half. The fluid pace was visible in the play calling as well as the scoreboard.
Langham Creek was without Under Armour All-American running back Toneil Carter, presumably sidelined in preparation for the playoffs. The show for the Lobos would instead belong to quarter back Chris Herron. Herron was responsible for all three of the Lobos first half touchdowns and racked up 226 total first half yards along the way. Herron’s first touchdown was set up by a Jordan Murray interception off the tip drill. After a decent Murray return, Herron was in position to score the game’s first points and did so by torching the Bobcats defense on a 38-yard quarterback keeper. The Lobos next first quarter drive would only need one play to reach pay dirt. Herron burned the Bobcats again, this time through the air on a 78-yard blast to wide receiver Praise Okorie.
After being held to only 63 total yards in the first quarter, Cy Fair got things going with 21 unanswered points in the second quarter alone. The Bobcats were led by running back Trenton Kennedy, who darted for 153 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Following an Erick Hallett interception, Kennedy got the Bobcats on the board with an 8-yard touchdown run.
Kennedy’s second touchdown would be the most impressive. He carried the Bobcats 76 yards to the end zone to cap a one play, 16 second drive. With no clear favorite after the first two quarters, the Lobos and Bobcats were tied at 21.
The Lobos first half star Chris Herron would not take the field in the second half. In the same spirit that kept Toneil Carter out of action, Langham Creek turned things over to secondary members of the depth chart. Cy Fair exploited the inexperienced competition and scored 28 straight points to start the second half. Bobcats receiver BJ Chambers caught both of his touchdown passes during that run, the longest coming on a 35-yard pass from Cameron Arnold.
Christian Richmond’s 90-yard kick off return for a touchdown wrapped things up for the Bobcats, 56-28.
Cy Fair finishes the regular season with an 8-2 record and will play their first playoff game against the 9-1 Houston Lamar Texans at Delmar Stadium on Friday, November 11 at 7pm. The 7-3 Langham Creek Lobos will take on the 4-6 Houston Heights Bulldogs in the first round at Delmar Stadium on Thursday, November 10th at 7pm.
