Robbie Robinson, the head coach at Mesquite High School and who has been on the staff since 1987 has announced he will be retiring as reported by Matt Stepp via Twitter. Robinson has been the head coach for the past 9 years at Mesquite and was a longtime assistant prior to his time at head coach. Robinson himself is a graduate of Mesquite High and was the successor to another Mesquite High grad in former head coach Steve Haplan.

Robinson’s time at head coach was highlighted by the 2011 and 2012 teams. In 2011 Mesquite finished 7-6 but went three rounds deep in the Class 5A DI playoffs before losing to The Woodlands. In 2012 Mesquite went undefeated in the regular season before losing to the eventual state champion that year in the Allen Eagles to finish 11-1. That season was the second of three straight playoff appearances from 2011-2013 as Robinson accumulated a 23-13 record in that stretch after posting back-to-back 1-9 seasons from 2009-2010.

Robinson was also a defensive assistant coach on the 2001 team that gave Mesquite High its first and only state title.
