When thinking of the illustrious talent South Grand Prairie High School produces in the secondary positions, hearing that a safety from their ranks is destined for stardom in the college football ranks is something that should be taken seriously.
Atanza Vongor is a name that’s getting many talking heads excited for the upcoming season, as this 6-1, 200 pound safety is looking to put a stamp on his spectacular prep career. He’s also hoping to take SGP back to the peak of Texas High School football in the process
With all the intangibles of being a playmaking safety, Vongor is widely regarded for his versatility. Although his primary position is in the secondary, he has seen time at receiver and even at running back where he recorded three rushing touchdowns. This bodes well for the rising senior as it is apparent he is one of the best defensive ball-catchers in the state. That ability combined with his knack for stopping the run makes him a valuable asset to the 13 schools that have offered the Warriors star.
Of those programs are the likes of Alabama, Michigan, Clemson and Texas, who Vongor will visit before announcing his verbal commitment at the beginning of March. Despite the attention from the various programs, it seems that his future might lie in Fort Worth with TCU after impressing at their Junior Day. Per Gabe Brooks of Scout, he was very impressed with all aspects of the experience, suggesting he is all but leaning in the direction of the Horned Frogs.
Now out of the shadow of teammate and Ohio State early-enrollee Jeffrey Okudah Vongor has a massive test ahead of himself for the upcoming season in dealing with the pressure to deliver for the Warriors defense. With his imminent announcement, the weight of making a decision would be off his shoulders and his sole focus being on his responsibilities on the field. Expect this four-star senior to raise his stock and living up to the top safety billing in Texas.
