Weslaco High has found their next head football coach and they didn’t have to turn very far. Michael Salinas has been hired as the next head coach of the Panthers. The move was first reported by South Texas Showcase. He replaces former head coach Tony Villareal, who was reassigned from his position back in January.

Salinas compiled a 36-20 record in five seasons at Edinburg Vela, which opened in 2012. He found a lot of recent success with the Sabercats, leading them to consecutive district titles in 2015 and 2016 and an appearance in the Class 5A Division I regional semifinals in 2015. They moved up to 6A the following season.
The Panthers finished 5-5 in 2016 and just missed out on a playoff spot coming out of District 32-6A. It’s only the second time they’ve missed the postseason since 2005.
