Can Flower Mound Steal The Show Within The District in 2017?

Flower Mound finished 2016 with a 4-6 record that placed them with a sixth place finish in District 5-6A. But credit to the players and staff involved as Flower Mound was able to revert the course of their season after a 1-3 start to get back to the .500 mark at 3-3, and end their season on a high note with a win over Lewisville. 4-6 is a step in the right direction for Flower Mound after posting back-to-back 1-9 seasons.

District 5-6A was a spectacle as the playoff picture would change week-by-week and outside of Southlake Carroll and Hebron, the remaining two playoff berth spots were up for grabs. Of course, the dominos did not fall in favor of Flower Mound which brings about the 2017 season where the Jaguars are hoping to iron out the remaining creases so they can have a shot at postseason success.

Key Losses

RB Ifeanyichukwu Uzowihe, WR William Seykora, WR Zach Welch, DL Brandon Bascue

Flower Mound will be losing their leading rusher and receiver with Uzowihe punching in 11 touchdowns and Seykora nabbing four touchdown receptions and 591 receiving yards.

Bascue is a big hit defensively, literally and figuratively as the 6-4 245 defensive end came back to have a spectacular season after missing his junior season due to injury.

Key Returners

QB Jackson Averitt, LB Connor Lee, DB Matt Greenwood

Flower Mound will be at an advantage at the quarterback position with Averitt returning. Averitt is an outstanding playmaker as he was able to throw for 2,073 yards, rush for 428 yards and accumulate 26 total touchdowns. He will no doubt be able to help Flower Mound in their offensive game.

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year in the district will be returning at the linebacker position as Connor Lee will look to beat his 146 tackles from this past year. Lee will also be receiving help at the secondary level with Greenwood and his tall 6-2 frame.

The Verdict

Flower Mound has the talent and staff to continue elevating its level of play. It looks as though their 1-win seasons are a thing of the past and they are ready to start accumulating postseason berths. While not yet maybe at the level of say Southlake Carroll or Euless Trinity, Flower Mound is right on their heels and coming up fast. Flower Mound could be a possible dark horse in the district and the 5-6 win range is a probable outcome for them in the upcoming season.
