After A Rough Injury Derailed His Sophomore Campaign, Deondrick Glass Is Ready To Play Some Football

Deondrick Glass had a sophomore season that 99% of players won’t have in their entire careers. The youngster rushed for 1,912 yards and 30 touchdowns according to MaxPreps, and most importantly, had an average of 10.4 yards per carry. That’s an average of a first down every time he touched the ball. That’s also without playing in the second half of any district matchups, and missing one district matchups entirely.

Despite his success, Glass is humble, constantly reminding everyone that he can’t possibly do this alone. He led off our conversation by saying “first off, I want to say that I didn’t do it all by myself. We had a very unselfish team. The quarterback, you know, he’s supposed to be a leader on the team, and he’s getting out there and blocking.”

After a relatively early exit in the playoffs for the Katy Tigers in 2016, Glass has his eyes set squarely on the future, and what he wants to do when he gets back, which according to him is “2,000 yards, 40 touchdowns, and of course, a state championship. I don’t want to settle for anything less than winning state this year.”

Part of that late season demise was an injury to Glass, specifically an injury to his right leg that occurred early in the second round of the playoffs against Cy Ranch. The Tigers took that victory home, but fell in the last seconds of their next game against a talented squad from North Shore.

The recovery process hasn’t been easy for Glass, who says that he’s still barred from contact, but will begin hard cutting in addition to running very soon. This process will be key for the Tigers, whose running game is one of the strongest in the state year in and year out.

Despite the massive injury, Glass is still a big recruit. He’s being looked at by tons of major programs. In his words, he loves them all, but particularly likes Michigan. Texas A&M is up there as well, because they’re so close to home. Oklahoma State is another big one for Glass (his running back idol is Barry Sanders).

Recruiting will have to take a backseat for now, though. Glass is laser-focused on the upcoming season. The Tigers have some key players returning, and Glass is excited about the possibilities that 2017 will bring.

“(Playing for Katy) means a lot to me. Not a lot of people have the opportunities that I have, and you know, being able to come in here as a freshman too, and contribute the way that I did, it’s just a blessing. Not a lot of people have that opportunity.”
