The Baylor Bears had been on a hot streak on the recruiting trail in their 2018 class. Now, it appears that effect has trickled down to the 2019 class. On Thursday, Round Rock Cedar Ridge wide receiver Jaylen Ellis announced his commitment to Baylor on his Twitter account.

Ellis picked up his first college offer from the Bears after attending a camp in Waco over the weekend. He becomes the first commitment for Baylor in their 2019 class. His former head coach, Shawn Bell, is now an offensive analyst on Matt Rhule’s coaching staff and as he told Tony Adams of 247 Sports, that relationship played a big part in his decision.

“That relationship meant a lot, actually,” Ellis told Adams in an interview on Thursday. “He even saw something in me I maybe didn’t see in myself at a time when people were telling me I couldn’t start on varsity because I was just a sophomore, he trusted I could do it. He gave me a shot at the high school level and now he’s helping give me a shot at the college level, which has always been my dream.”

Ellis displayed tremendous amount of versatility and speed as a cornerback on defense and as a big play receiver on offense. The rising junior caught 23 passes for 690 yards and 7 touchdowns last season for the Raiders, averaging an impressive 30 yards per catch.

Coming off a season where he made first-team all-district, Ellis should see his numbers improve as he gets more opportunity on the field as Cedar Ridge looks to repeat as district champions and make a deeper postseason run.
