Per Adam Schefter, the Lions and Stafford agreed to a contract extension that makes the signal caller the highest-paid player in NFL history.

According to Michael Rothstein of ESPN, the deal is for five years and worth $135 million. The Lions announced the extension but did not disclose the terms.

Stafford’s reported deal is worth more than Derek Carr’s recent extension ($25 million annually) and is expected to be worth more guaranteed money than Andrew Luck ($87 million), per ESPN.

After two injury-filled seasons to start his career, Stafford has started every game for Detroit since 2011, compiling a 51-58 record during that stretch. He’s also at or near the top of several passing statistics with the franchise, throwing for more than 30,000 yards and 187 touchdowns in his career. He had another solid year in 2016, throwing for 4,327 yards and 24 touchdowns while leading the Lions to eight comeback wins.
The Lions travel to Buffalo on Thursday for their final preseason game before they open at home against the Arizona Cardinals on September 10.
