The opening week of high school football in Texas provided much intrigue and excitement, not just from 6A and 5A, but smaller programs from 4A down enjoyed success in their first win of the season. With many storylines emerging from these games, let’s take a look at four of the most intriguing stories:

Lexington survives season opener

Both Lexington and Mart should be solid teams in their respective classification, but it was the former who prevailed in this clash of titans 40-38. Mart entered the fourth quarter with a 31-26 lead, however a pair of touchdowns by Lexington allowed the Eagles to squeak out a win. Walker Hess completed 19 passes for 286 yards and three touchdowns in the winning effort. Mart was led by their rushing game, as Tyrek Horne tallied 277 yards rushing and three scores.

Happy makes season-opening statement

In one of the more major wins for a football program in Texas last week, fans attending the Jaybird Classic in Jayton were left astonished after the Happy Cowboys came out on top of a wild shootout, defeating Richland Springs 96-74. Happy’s offense was unstoppable, scoring on every possession except for one. Colton McCarley turned in a monster performance, rushing for 226 yards and three touchdowns, and completed nine passes for 214 yards and four scores.

Successful week for Class 3A

Class 3A as a whole did very well in week one, going 23-14 against 4A opponents, and 26-18 against 2A opponents. Some big names in these win columns include the aforementioned Lexington, Cameron Yoe (40-14 W vs. Bellville), Brock (55-7 W vs. Stamford), Canadian (47-23 W vs. Bushland) and Franklin (36-35 W vs. Navasota).

Baseball on the gridiron

There were five games at the small school level last week in which neither team managed double digit points. Childress topped Wellington 9-8 after a game winning field-goal was kicked in the waning moments in perhaps the most prolific of these. Other nailbiters across the state included Whitesboro’s 7-6 win over Anna, Athens’ 6-0 shutout of Mexia, Little River Academy’s 7-6 victory over Rogers, and Banquete topping Santa Gertrudis Academy 9-6.
