Cuero Vs. Sinton: Offense Moves The Needle, Defense Wins Games

SINTON, Texas — Great teams execute. Cuero and Sinton, both of which are undefeated, are great teams. Therefore, they execute pretty well.

Unfortunately, a matchup like this means one of them will end up with a blemish on its record by the end of Friday. For Cuero coach Travis Reeve, he’s hoping it’s Sinton. But he knows it’s an uphill battle.

“The thing that jumps out to you when you watch film is they’re very explosive on offense. They’ve got a good running back, quarterback, receivers,” Reeve said as he praised the Pirates staff. “They’ve been putting up a lot of points and they do it in a hurry. It’s going to be quite the challenge to contain them.”

Fortunately for the Gobblers, they’ve got quite the staff themselves.

‘ME’ BEFORE ‘WE’

Keiran Grant, the Gobblers running back, has taken 86 attempts for a whopping 581 touchdowns, scoring 11 times on the way.

The passing game has been generous as well, as quarterback Drew Riemenschneider has completed 75 percent of his passes for almost 1,200 yards. With both parts of the offense moving in full swing, the Gobblers have the luxury many others don’t: choice.

“We’ve been pretty balanced this year,” Reeve said. “We’re blessed to have several weapons of our own on offense and our kids have done a good job of executing so far.

“I’d pick whichever one the defense is giving us,” Reeve continued, when asked if he could choose which one to use the most. “I don’t think you go into the game looking at it that way. We want to execute at a high level of what we do and take what the defense gives us. If we can do that, we give ourselves a chance to have some success.”

Sinton Warrants Respect

But the Goblers are clearly not the only team on the field with weapons, as the Pirates have at least one who Cuero has on its radar.

One giant running back. Tristan Canales, a 5’11”, 200 pound back, who averages 188 yards a game. Doing the math quickly, that puts him over 1,100 yards in seven games.

A weapon like that is hard to find, it’s even harder to prepare for.

“He’s a tremendous running back. Not only does he have great open field speed, he’s got great balance and he runs through arm tackles,” Reeve said of Canales. “I’m not sure we have nayone who can simulate him in practice. We’re going to have to do a great job of playing great team defense, we’re going to need to get more than one guy there.”

Reeve and his Gobblers from Cuero will need to put in a lot of work to remain undefeated. But a win over Sinton would put it in the driver seat for the 4A-2 Region IV District 15 Championship.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Pirate Stadium in Sinton.
