ARLINGTON — While Strawn’s Superman-like Greyhounds have outpaced their last ? opponents, Balmorhea has been decisively dominant — especially defensively.

Both will meet to decide the UIL Class 1A Division II State Championship at 2 p.m. Wednesday at AT&T Stadium.

The (13-0) Bears have scored at least 46 points in each of their games and held opponents to 16 or fewer in eight. They have also dispatched state-ranked foes in Garden City and Valley High Schools during that span.

Balmorhea, which can become the first Odessa-area team to win an undefeated, undisputed state title since Iraan in 1996, returns to AT&T Stadium having won each game by at least 30 points and finishing off 11 teams by 45 points.

To reach the state championship Strawn (15-0) had to pave a dominant road, upsetting top-ranked Milford and blowing out eight of its 15 points via shutout.

The Greyhounds have won all but one of their games by the 45-point “mercy rule” — its state semifinal with Milford.

Strawn boasts have No. 1 defense in the Class 2A Division II, allowing an average of 10.7 points per game. Balmorhea, though, is a close second at 14.9.
