With another notch in Beeville Jones’ “win” belt, the Trojans push forward in the Class 4A, Division I playoffs.
Jones beat Zapata 44-7 in the bi-district round last week.
With a 27-yard touchdown pass to receiver Matthew Puente, quarterback Seth Gomez set the pace for the Trojans on their opening drive Friday night against Zapata.
In the Trojans’ second drive, receiver Austin Alvarez carried a ball 35 yards to the house for their second touchdown of the game, setting the tone of dominance in less than four minutes.
The Trojans went into halftime ahead 23-0.
On the opening play of the second half, junior Jalen Spicer returned the kickoff 95-yards to the end zone. By the time the fourth quarter came, Jones was able to put in its second- and third-string players, who continued the game with scoring drives of their own.
The Trojans were even afforded the luxury of experimenting with players as they used an offensive lineman as a running back.
The Trojans’ offense had 245 rushing yards and 95 passing yards for a total of 340 yards, while the defense held Zapata to 26 rushing yards and 89 passing yards for a total of 115 yards.
Looking ahead
Jones defensive coordinator Zane Brown is active on Twitter, where he keeps the fans and teams motivated with regular updates about how practice, weights and scouting is going.
Jones’ coaches are consistent with a mantra of #EEP, which stands for “Energy, Effort, Passion,” and it’s clear their athletes also live and play by the mantra.
Jones (11-0) faces El Campo (9-2) on Friday in an area round playoff game after the Ricebirds earned a 20-14 comeback win against Fredericksburg. El Campo missed playoffs in 2018 but made it to the area round in 2017, where they suffered a 24-9 loss to Kilgore at Waco ISD Stadium.
The games will be played at Port Lavaca Sandcrab Stadium with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
