HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Dallas Cowboys turn 60 years old

The Dallas Cowboys are entering a new decade.

While the world saw the 2010s close on New Year’s Eve, America’s Team is celebrating a different milestone, beginning its 60th year of existence today.

The franchise was established Jan. 28, 1960, and in the six decades since, fans have experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

Winners of five Super Bowls (1971, 1977, 1992, 1993 and 1995), the Cowboys have 22 players inducted into the Hall of Fame, but they’ve suffered their share of heartache as well.

Dallas had five consecutive losing seasons from 1986 to 1990, posted identical 5-11 records in three consecutive seasons to begin the millennium and most recently drudged through a period of mediocrity, going 8-8 in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Through it all, though, the Cowboys have established themselves as a cornerstone of the NFL, becoming one of the most valuable franchises in the world.

Some people love them, and other people loathe the, but the Dallas Cowboys’ impact on the sports world cannot be denied, giving us legends like Emmitt Smith, Roger Staubach and Bob Lilly, providing entertainment every Thanksgiving (for better or worse) and bringing to life the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, who were predecessors for modern cheer teams in professional sports.

Nobody knows what the future holds for the franchise, but for now, fans undoubtedly will celebrate today by saying, “How bout them Cowboys!” at some point.
