Looking ahead to the start of the 2020 season, a lot is up in the air. However, what we do have is our imaginations and schedules to start thinking about the potential outcomes.
Austin Westlake’s Todd Dodge
Coming off a state championship in 2019, and the first championship since Drew Brees led the Chaps in 1996, excitement at Westlake is at an all time high. Todd Dodge is a winner, and knows how to lead and develop young men on the gridiron and in the classroom.
Coach Dodge opens the 2020 season against another Coach Dodge, his son, who coaches Southlake Carrol’s Dragons. All eyes are on Westlake and Coach Todd Dodge in their efforts for a repeat.
Denton Guyer’s Rodney Webb
After a shocking turn of events leading to the resignation of coach John Walsh at Guyer back in March, Denton ISD director of athletics, Joey Florence, didn’t take long before he announced the move to hire Rockwall’s Rodney Webb.
Coach Webb has been successful at every school he has coached at. Last year at Rockwall might have very well been his best job yet, making it to the state semifinals against Duncanville before getting bounced.
Coming to the talent rich area of Denton, Webb looks to continue his winning ways, and the winning legacy of Denton Guyer.
Shadow Creek’s Brad Butler
Coming off a state title in just its second varsity year, coach Butler has proved that the new guys on the block can win, and win fast. After just opening in 2016 with 9th and 10th graders, 2019 was just the school’s second year of varsity football, and they showed out in a big way knocking off Denton Ryan in the state final game.
Frisco Lone Star’s Jeff Rayburn
Lone Star had an incredible 2019 season. Many around the DFW area thought that Lone Star could defeat Denton Ryan in the state semifinal game to move on, however that did not happen.
A question is looming, how do you replace the state’s all-time leader in receiving yards in Marvin Mims – who is moving on to Oklahoma?
One thing is certain, Lone Stars Sophomore QB Garrett Rangel is the real deal and returns with all that experience. Things are setting up nicely for coach Rayburn to have another deep run at the state title in 2020.
