Spring Hill hired its new head football coach internally Friday morning, promoting offensive coordinator Weston Griffis to the head coaching and athletic director roles for the school.
The head coaching position was vacated on May 8th when Jonny Louvier left to take over at Gladewater, his hometown school, after just one year at the helm in Spring Hill. He led Spring Hill to a 5-6 record last season and their first playoff victory in 15 years when they defeated Caddo Mills 23-12 in the first round.
Griffis has been coaching since 2008 and had most recently served as the offensive line coach at Tyler Lee High School in 2017 and 2018 before joining Louvier’s staff at Spring Hill as offensive coordinator last summer.
After going 2-2 in district play last season, Spring Hill’s district in 8-4A Division II this year will be nearly identical to last year’s with Paris North Lamar the only new addition. This means in addition to North Lamar, Spring Hill will square off against Gilmer, Pittsburg, Texarkana Liberty-Eylau, and face a daunting visit from defending state champions Texarkana Pleasant Grove.
Last season under Griffis’ direction, Spring Hill averaged 27.9 points per game. Offensively, he will have to replace starting quarterback Gage White, a first team all-district selection last year. However, Griffis still has plenty of weapons at his disposal at receiver as rising senior Tyrese Jones, a first team selection in 2019 with 757 yards and 5 touchdowns last year, and junior Eric Morrow, a second team selection in 2019, both return.
On defense, Griffis has a lot more pieces to replace as Lamar University commit linebacker Vencent Rockwell as well as first team all-district selections defensive lineman Malik Cooks and defensive back Zach Henry all graduated.
Griffis will make his head coaching debut at Spring Hill when Sabine comes to visit Aug. 28. He will look to build off of last year’s playoff victory and take the team to the playoffs for the second year running.
