The Denton Guyer Wildcats made it all the way to the championship game last year, falling short to Austin Westlake, 24-0. Their season got off to a great start, beating the Hebron Hawks, who they battled in last year’s playoff. The Hawks lost a lot of seniors from their 8-3 team last year, but their a strong team again this year and have hopes themselves of advancing far in this year’s playoffs.
The game was close at halftime with Denton Guyer up 21-13, but the Wildcats scored the next 21 points to take control. This was the first win for their new Head Coach, Rodney Webb. Their star quarterback and Texas A&M commit Eli Stowers is still out recovering from knee surgery, but the Wildcats have a deep and talented roster and they showed that they should be a favorite to make it back to the state title game with an impressive opening win over a strong opponent like Hebron. The Wildcats next play Denton Ryan, who is perhaps the best team in 5A this year.
