#4 Team in Texas Cancels the Rest of Their Season Due to Positive COVID Test

The Lake Travis Cavaliers have canceled the rest of their regular season due to a coach testing positive for COVID-19 this week. This includes the game that was canceled this past Friday against Akins and the showdown with the #3 team in the state, the Austin Westlake Chaparrals, that was scheduled for the 27th.  Though there were a lot of calls from people on social media for these two games to be considered forfeits, they will officially be no contests. This means that Lake Travis will end their season 6-0 and 5-0 in district play.  Westlake will now end their season 8-0 and 6-0 in district play and will be the higher playoff seed.

Cavaliers coach Hank Carter broke the news in an email to football parents on Saturday. In part, Carter’s email said:

“In accordance with Lake Travis ISD’s response to COVID-19 protocols and the length of time required for contact tracing of those identified to have been in close contact with the affected individual … all junior varsity and varsity games against Westlake have been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.”

District 26-6A guidelines require a team to be able to practice three times before they play a game.  Lake Travis Coach said that, at best, only one practice would have been possible before a possible game against Austin Westlake on the 27th.   If there are no more positive cases, Lake Travis will be able to play in the playoffs, however, if there are more positive tests, they may have to forfeit their first round playoff game.
