Texas HS Football Week Three Teams of the Week

It was yet another memorable week of high school football with crazy endings and notable upsets across the state.

See who our teams of the week for each classification are below and then vote at the bottom of the article for who you think should be the Week Three TexasHSFootball Team of the Week.

6A: Austin High Maroons

Austin High was a 28-point underdog heading into their district opener against Anderson.

However, after going winless in district play a year ago, the Maroons got their new head coach Bernard Riley his first win in dramatic fashion.

After Anderson purposely took a safety to avoid punting out of its own end zone, the Maroons got the ball trailing 20-18 with just two minutes left.

Sophomore quarterback John Latham rose to the occasion. He connected with receiver Bryson Batts twice to help lead them into field goal range at the Anderson 31-yard line, setting the stage for senior kicker Sam Eccles.

He delivered, nailing a 48-yard field goal with just 20 seconds left to give Austin a dramatic and memorable 21-20 victory over the Trojans.

5A: Frisco Reedy Lions

The Frisco Reedy defense came to play on Friday. The Lions forced two turnovers and held a talented Lone Star offense to just 14 total rushing yards.

On the other side of the ball for Reedy, running back Dennis Moody completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Goines on the final offensive play of the first half to give Reedy a 13-7 lead at the interval.

That touchdown proved to be the final score of the game as the Reedy defense shut out Lone Star in the second half to secure the upset over the number two team in 5A Division I. The win also snapped Lone Star’s 34-game winning streak over its fellow Frisco ISD schools.

4A: Dallas Pinkston Vikings

The Vikings were 31-point underdogs heading into their home non-district matchup against Seagoville.

They quickly showed why games aren’t played on paper.

Pinkston running back Melvin Kelly proved to be a threat in the red zone with two touchdowns, while quarterback Camyre Childress connected with Relvin Kelly in the second quarter for an explosive 80-yard score.

Behind those three touchdowns, the Vikings jumped out to a 21-6 lead in the third quarter. Seagoville tried to make it a game before the Viking defense came up with a late fourth quarter stop at their own 47 to preserve a 21-20 victory.

The win moves them to 3-0 on the season. It’s an impressive start considering those three wins already match the number of victories the Vikings have had in the past three seasons combined.

3A: Karnes City Badgers

The Battle of Highway 181 was one to remember this year.

Despite coming into the rivalry showdown as heavy favorites, Karnes City found itself down by two scores against Kenedy late in the fourth quarter.

The Badgers responded.

Jason Foley scored on a 10-yard scamper to cut the deficit to 20-14 with just over three minutes to go. And just over a minute later, senior running back Jeremiah Rivera broke through the Kenedy defense for a 59-yard touchdown that put Karnes City up for good 21-20.

Rivera finished with 202 rushing yards and two touchdowns as the Badgers came away with an improbable rivalry victory after scoring 21 fourth quarter points.

2A: Shiner Comanches

Regarded as one of the top teams in all of 2A, Shiner had a tough test this week against Poth, the number six team 3A Division II.

It went down to the wire.

With Shiner down 21-14 with just 10 seconds left, Comanche running back Dalton Brooks powered his way into the end zone from one yard out to cut the Poth lead to just one point.

However, the drama wasn’t over. Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker made the gutsy decision to go for two to end the game right then and there.

Yet again, Brooks delivered. He went on a winding run, reversing field to eventually escape the Poth defense for an unbelievable two-point conversion to give Shiner the 22-21 victory.

1A: Westbrook Wildcats

In the 1A Division I matchup of the weekend, #1 Westbrook took on #5 Rankin.

The game certainly lived up to its hype.

David Bunger gave Rankin a 58-52 lead with just three minutes to go on a 30-yard rushing score, but Westbrook wasn’t done.

Westbrook running back Cedric Ware had a monster night for the Wildcats with 251 rushing yards, 69 receiving yards and seven total touchdowns.

And unsurprisingly, it was Ware who made the difference. He found the end zone with just 42 seconds left on a six-yard scamper before running in the point after attempt to secure a 59-58 victory for Westbrook in an unforgettable game.
