4A Team of the Week: La Vernia Bears
La Vernia looked in trouble in its final non-district game, down 20-0 against Sinton in the third quarter. However, the Bears never gave up.
Stratton Hayes had two passing touchdowns in the second half, including a 48-yard bomb to Logan Maytum with five minutes left that gave La Vernia a 28-27 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

In between Hayes’ two passing touchdown, Andrew Strickland had a pick-six and wide receiver Keegan Hajek found Colten Schmid for a 51-yard touchdown on a trick play. Impressively, this four touchdown barrage took place during just an eight minute period on the game clock.

La Vernia will look to keep the momentum from this second half offensive flurry going when it hosts Port Lavaca Calhoun in its district opener on Oct. 7.
