1A Team of the Week: Southland Eagles
Southland’s offense was coming off a rough game in week five where it was shutout by Amherst 48-0.
The Eagles showed no such signs of a hangover this past week against Lazbuddie.
There were plenty of points scored throughout, but Southland found itself trailing by one score heading into the final play of the game.
Southland needed some late game heroics.
Eagle running back Rey Flores did just that. He took the pitch on the final play, and, despite losing his footing, he was still able to find his receiver Zach Grubbs for an improbable touchdown with just one second remaining.
That play secured Southland a 77-74 victory. It was the Eagles’ third win of the season, a massive step forward for the program considering they won just one game combined the past two seasons.
Southland will look to carry it early season success into district play as it hosts Klondike in the district opener for both teams this Friday.
