The Wimberley Texans had a great season.

The headline in 4A Division II is that the Carthage Bulldogs won their 9th state title, beating the Wimberley Texans, 42-0. Lost in the headline, and the great UIL State Championship game performance by Carthage, is that the Wimberley Texans had a great season, and have become the dominant program in District 13-4A DII.

The Texans entered the state title game at 15-0. They outscored their opponents an average of 45-14 per game. Wimberley went undefeated in district play, winning their district by 2 games over Geronimo Navarro. Late in the season, the Texans had a 3-game stretch in which they outscored their opponents 195-0.

In the 4A DII State Semifinal, Wimberley found themselves down 30-18 to the Cuero Gobblers. They then scored 24 straight points, capped off by a 64-yard go-ahead touchdown from running back Johnny Ball. Ball finished with 193 yards rushing, and the Texans held on for a 42-36 win to reach the 4th state title game in the school’s history.

The Texans were led this year by sophomore quarterback Cody Stoever.  Stoever finished the season with 2,441 passing yards and 31 passing touchdowns. He added 1,170 yards rushing with 20 rushing touchdowns.

Though the Texans will lose senior running back Johnny Ball next season, Head Coach Doug Warren, 93—34 in 10 seasons at Wimberley, has a team full of returning talent on both sides of the ball and the Texans are one of the favorites to make it to another state final in 2023.
