The Early Life of Cedric Benson
Born on December 28, 1982, in Midland, Texas, Cedric Myron Benson showed a natural affinity for sports from a young age. Growing up in a loving household with his mother, Jackie, and brother, Dominic, Cedric quickly developed a passion for football. However, his athletic abilities were not limited to just one sport, as he also excelled in baseball and track and field.
Texas High School Dominance: Football Prodigy in the Making
Cedric attended Robert E. Lee High School in Midland, where his athletic prowess truly began to shine. As a running back for the football team, Benson displayed a combination of power, agility, and speed, making him a force to be reckoned with on the field. By the end of his high school career, he had amassed a staggering 8,423 rushing yards and 127 touchdowns, breaking numerous Texas state records in the process.
In addition to his gridiron success, Benson was a standout on the baseball field as well. He was even drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 12th round of the 2001 MLB Draft. However, Benson chose to pursue football and committed to the University of Texas at Austin to play college ball.
The College Years: Texas Longhorns Legend
Cedric Benson’s college career at the University of Texas was nothing short of spectacular. As a true freshman, he immediately made an impact on the team by rushing for 1,053 yards and 12 touchdowns. Over the course of his four years with the Longhorns, Benson continued to improve his game, ultimately becoming one of the most prolific running backs in NCAA history.
Record-Breaking Performances and Accolades
During his time at Texas, Benson accumulated 5,540 rushing yards and 64 touchdowns, both of which rank second in school history behind only Ricky Williams. Moreover, he became just the fifth player in NCAA history to rush for over 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons. These exceptional performances earned Benson several accolades, including being a two-time first-team All-Big 12 selection and a consensus first-team All-American in 2004.
Cedric Benson’s outstanding college career culminated in his 2004 win of the prestigious Doak Walker Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate running back. With his college years behind him, Benson set his sights on the NFL, entering the 2005 NFL Draft.
A Decade in the NFL: Benson’s Professional Career
Cedric Benson was selected as the fourth overall pick by the Chicago Bears in the 2005 NFL Draft and embarked on a 10-year professional career that would see its share of highs and lows. From overcoming early struggles to becoming a key contributor for multiple teams, Benson’s journey in the NFL is a testament to his resilience and determination.
Finding His Stride with the Bears and Bengals
Benson’s rookie season with the Chicago Bears was challenging, as he was limited to just 67 carries and 272 rushing yards due to injuries. However, he began to find his footing in the league during the 2006 season, playing an instrumental role in helping the Bears reach Super Bowl XLI. Unfortunately, a knee injury forced him to leave the game early, and the Bears ultimately fell short against the Indianapolis Colts.
In 2008, after three seasons with the Bears, Benson was released and later signed by the Cincinnati Bengals. This move proved to be a turning point in his career. He revitalized his game, rushing for over 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons with the Bengals. Benson’s powerful running style became a crucial component of the team’s offensive attack, and he earned a reputation as a reliable and productive workhorse.
Final Seasons and Career Statistics
Benson’s tenure with the Bengals ended after the 2011 season, and he signed a one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers in 2012. Unfortunately, a foot injury limited his playing time to just five games that season. He would not return to the NFL after that, effectively marking the end of his professional football career.
Throughout his 10-year NFL career, Cedric Benson amassed 6,017 rushing yards, 1,605 receiving yards, and 33 total touchdowns. While his time in the league had its share of ups and downs, there is no denying his impact on the field when healthy and at his best.
