Eagles Declaw the Bengals

On Friday night, the Braswell Bengals tried to make it two in a row, as they traveled to Eagle Stadium to take on the Allen Eagles, who have been flying high on a two-game win streak.

The Eagles started off the game slow, as they struggled to put points on the board in the first half.  Quarterback Brady Bricker tried to get his team going, as he scored one of his two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, putting Allen on the board first.  Bricker ended up completing 7 of 15 pass attempts for 80 yards, and rushed for 105 yards on the night. Bricker spread the ball around, connecting with different receivers throughout the game.

Bricker connected with Micah Ellis, who racked up 23 yards on 3 catches, Gavin Akins, who had 1 catch for 23 yards, Messiah Washington, who caught 1 pass for 13 yards, and Quinton Hammonds, who also recorded a catch for 16 yards. With no scores coming from the air, the Eagles relied on pounding the rock, as running back Amir McDowell put up some video game numbers.

McDowell rushed for 142 yards on 8 touchdowns, finding the endzone twice. Micah Ellis rushed for 50 yards on 8 touches, and Jaxsen Lyons rushed for 10 yards on his lone touch. Senior kicker Braydon Nelson nailed a 37-yard field goal in the first half, and a 35-yard field goal in the second half.

The Eagles defense also made some big plays.  Messiah Washington, who had a reception earlier in the game, played defensive back and picked off a Nicholas Johnson pass in the second half.  The Eagles special teams also made plays.  The Eagles blocked a field goal attempt by Braswell to end the first half, as well as a Braswell extra point late in the game.  Allen also made some big stops on 4th down attempts.

Quarterback Nicholas Johnson tried keeping his team in the game, completing 11 of 23 passes for 172 yards, and rushing for 24 yards.  Johnson connected with Christopher Johnson, who had 4 catches for 75 yards and a touchdown, and Kaden Millinder, who racked up 4 catches for 48 yards.

The ground game would prove to be a little more effective than the passing game, as Jeremiah Shipp rushed for 53 yards on 8 touches, and Brailyn Strickland rushed for 27 yards on 10 touches. The Bengals defense was able to keep the game close in the first half, but they couldn’t stop the Eagles in the second half, as Allen exploded out the gates, pulling away from the Bengals.

Allen wins this one 33-9.

Next week, Allen will continue district play as they travel north to take on Rock Hill, who is coming off a close loss to Prosper. Denton Braswell will return home to continue their district play, as they take on the Lions from McKinney, who are coming off a big win against McKinney Boyd.
