Abilene Cooper Dominates Lubbock Coronado 53-7

Eric Watson - CBS Insurance LLP - A Gallagher Company

On Friday, the Coronado Mustangs hosted the Abilene Cooper Cougars in a non-district matchup at Lowery Field. Coronado entered the game with a 1-2 record after a devastating defeat to Abilene Wylie, losing 41-12, and hoped to turn things around. Meanwhile, Cooper was 0-3 on the season, coming off a narrow 31-27 loss to San Angelo Central, and sought to secure their first victory.

The game started slowly for both teams, with aggressive defenses shutting each other out in the first quarter, ending the period in a tie. Despite the scoreless first quarter, the Cougars found their rhythm and took a commanding 21-0 lead by halftime.

Carrying their momentum into the third quarter, Cooper’s defense stifled the Mustangs, who struggled offensively and were shut out for three consecutive quarters. The Cougars added 19 more unanswered points, leaving the score at 40-0 heading into the fourth quarter. In the final moments, Cooper continued to dominate, scoring another 13 points, while Coronado finally got on the board, ending the game with a final score of 53-7.

Next week, Coronado will continue their season against Tascosa, who is 1-3 after a 50-48 loss to Odessa Permian. Abilene Cooper will take a bye next week and resume their season on October 4 against Abilene Wylie.
