Week six of the Texas High School football season got started Thursday night in Cypress with a big district 16-6A matchup between the Bridgeland Bears (3-1, 1-0) and the Cypress Springs Panthers (4-0, 1-0). Bridgeland came in as the defending district champions and are looking to reclaim the crown. Bridgeland was 6-0 all-time against Cy-Springs coming into this game since they started football back in 2018; the Panthers were looking to break that streak, riding a high-powered offense, scoring 42 points a game through their first four games.

Game Recap

Bridgeland received the ball to open the game, and on the second play of the drive, Kash Schwab broke a 70-yard run to take the Bears inside the Cy-Springs 10-yard line. The Panther’s defense would hold, keeping Bridgeland out of the endzone, leading to a 22-yard field goal by Grayson Geisler to open the scoring. On the first play of the ensuing Cy-Springs drive, the Jared Hagger pass was intercepted by Tristen Villanueva and returned to the endzone for a pick-six. With 9:20 remaining in the first quarter, Bridgeland led 10-0.

Following another Cy-Springs turnover and a Bridgeland punt, Cy-Springs went three-and-out and lined up for a punt at their own 22-yard line. The snap would go over the head of the punter and out the back of the endzone for a safety. Following the safety, Henry Soine received the kickoff, and broke it down the left sideline, returning it all the way to the endzone for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, so Bridgeland led 18-0 late in the first quarter.

The rest of the game was all about defense, as over the next ten combined drives, there was one turnover, six punts, and three turnover-on-downs, leading to scoreless second and third quarters.

With 10:05 left in the game, Devontae Batiste picked off a pass, setting up Cy-Springs inside the Bridgeland 15-yard line to give the Panthers life. But the Bridgeland defense would hold again, as the Panthers turned the ball over on downs for the third time of the game.

Cy-Springs got on the board late, as their 11-play drive would be capped off with a 2-yard touchdown run by Paris Melvin Jr. The two-point conversion was no good, so the score stood at 18-6 with 1:37 remaining. Cy-Springs lined up for an onside kick, and Bridgeland recovered it, which would bring this one to an end.

Bridgeland gets a big district win, 18-6.
