So Quinn Ewers decided to skip his senior year…of high school and report to Ohio State a year early. No problem. Southlake Carroll Head coach Riley Dodge handed the ball to backup QB Kaden Anderson and named him the starter for the 2021 season.
Anderson did not disappoint. He led the Dragons to a 45-21 win over Highland Park in his first varsity start before a national TV audience on ESPN.
The Scots of Highland Park hold the state record for most wins with 854, and they dressed 147 players for the game at Jerry’s World (AT&T Stadium) in Arlington, TX.
Southlake Carroll is known for producing great quarterbacks: Riley Dodge, Chase Daniel, Greg McElroy. Kaden Anderson now has his turn.
Anderson overcame high snaps from his center all night to finish 16 of 23 passing for 261 yards, three touchdowns, and no INTs and added a rushing touchdown. He was named player of the game.
Anderson connected with WR Landon Samson for a 71-yard TD pass on his second throw of the game, with barely a tick or two on the clock starting the first quarter. Samson had 127 receiving yards and scored two TDs. Samson is a South Carolina commit.
RB Owen Allen rushed for 215 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21 carries, averaging over 10 yards per carry.
WR James Lehman also made a nifty, one-handed catch for a touchdown.
The Dragons gained 525 yards of total offense and did not punt in the game. However, Coach Dodge cant be happy with his team’s lack of focus, committing 12 penalties for 101 yards.

Unlike the Dragons balanced attack, the Scots couldn’t get anything going consistently on offense, with missed opportunities to keep the game close and two turnovers. The Scots were held to just 244 total yards for the game.
