HOUSTON — Angleton overcame a slow start to pull away from Richmond Foster, win 41-10 Friday night at NRG Stadium and claim a berth in a handful of state semifinal matchups.

Angleton outdid its 27-point victory against the Falcons earlier in the season. That included the play of BJ Foster —who missed the last game —and his contributions to continuing the Wildcats’ now 13-0 winning season. Richmond Foster didn’t get a single offensive touchdown and finished with just 100 yards of total offense.

“We’ve only allowed eight of those [offensive touchdowns],” Wildcat Head Coach Ryan Roark “That’s what we’ve been doing all year long and I have to tip my cap to our defensive staff.”

Both teams attempted to grind their way through the game, with Foster leaning on the two-back system of Quinton Oliver and Alec Harris. Texas commit Foster and SMU commit Tamerik Williams dominated offensive touches for Angleton. Williams finished with 118 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Foster had 126 yards off fourteen carries and three touchdowns and all of the offensive catches, six for 96 yards.

The Falcons struck first with a 26-yard field goal with 1:27 in the first quarter, coming off an eight-minute drive. Foster opened the big plays with a 67-yard rushing touchdown 17 seconds later, but it ended up being the entirety of his first-half rushing yards, despite having five more rushes in the half. The Texas commit also fumbled which was returned 61 yards by the Falcons to put them ahead 10-7. He often lined up out wide, and was covered by Arizona safety commit Christian Young, and battled it out all night long, Young almost had a pick six and was testing the five-star physically early.

By the half, Angleton had tacked on a field goal, but despite outgaining Foster by 93 yards, were tied up with the Falcons 10-10.

Angleton rolls on

Mistakes and an injury to Oliver killed the Falcons in the second half, allowing Angleton to pull away. Richmond Foster’s first possession of the half, a drive that started on their own 43-yard line, ended up being punted away from their own 3-yard lined due to penalties and sacks.  Angleton couldn’t capitalize on the short field, but it did not matter.

On the ensuing Foster possession, Evrin Hawkins came up with an interception, the first turnover for an Angleton defense that would go on to force two more. The offense did their part scoring a 36-yard field goal with 2:36 left in the third quarter for a 13-10 score going into the fourth quarter.

Things went from bad to worse for Foster as Falcons quarterback Quinton Oliver went down with an injury minutes later.

Angleton went on a five-minute scoring spree sparked by Hawkins getting his second interception — this one on backup Grant Guzzetta’s first pass attempt with nine minutes remaining in the game.

Foster scored twice within the next two minutes, scoring from 2 yards out off the interception and, on the ensuing Falcons’ drive, on a Guzzetta fumble and a 13-yard touchdown when Foster punched it in for his third score of the night.

The Wildcats would go on to score off a Seth Cosme 13-yard rush with a little more than four minutes remaining, his first touchdown of the night. Angleton’s defense closed it out for the 41-10 win. For the first time since 1958, Angleton is headed to the state semifinals.

“It was a good feeling for our team and our community just to get out here and face off,” Foster said. “It’s going to be a good one[against Manvel]. Back in this stadium and we’re looking forward to it.”

Angleton will take on Manvel in the state semifinals Dec. 15 at NRG Stadium.
