Arlington Martin Runs Past Lake Travis 39-31

Photos by Pat Carrigan

Lake Travis vs Arlington Martin was one of the biggest matchups of week one. Both teams are ranked in the top 20 of all state rankings, with Lake Travis ranked as high as #2 in some rankings. The game lived up to the hype.

The Lake Travis Cavaliers are ranked high in part because, well, they always are, but also because of senior Michigan State commit QB, Bo Edmunson. Edmundson is ranked as our #22 player in the state. He had just been a guest on our Texas HS Football podcast. Bo missed this game due to an injury. We have no further information on the injury or his availability going forward.

Without Edmundson, Arlington Martin would be considered a slight favorite, and that is how the game played out, with Martin getting the 39-31 win.

Martin took control from the start with a long return on the opening kickoff. From there, they established a dominant run game, led by Michael Barrow.  The Warrior’s ground attack totaled 313 yards out of the team’s total 391 yards.

Barrow scored touchdowns on two of the first three drives for Martin, with the Warriors getting a field goal on the other drive. Barrow ended the game with 207 yards and 4 touchdowns, immediately vaulting himself as a guy to consider as one of the best running backs in the state in 2022.

Lake Travis did put up a fight. They kept Arlington Martin from getting too big of a lead. The Cavaliers scored on back-to-back drives midway through the first half to cut the lead to one, but Martin responded with a TD to go into the half of 25-17.

In the second half, Barrow scored again to put Martin up 15. But, Nico Hamilton had the best play of the game with a 72-yard touchdown run for Lake Travis to cut the lead back to 8. Then, Martin responded right away with, you guessed it, another Barrow TD to put the game away. Travis would score one more late TD to make the final 39-31.

Arlington Martin will next go to play at Cedar Hill and then face Allen at home in week 3. If Martin can start 3-0, they will likely find themselves near a top 5 ranking in the state.

Lake Travis will look to rebound against Cibolo Steele. Steele had an impressive 35-34 victory over San Antonio Brennan and will be a tough matchup for Lake Travis, especially if Edmundson does not play. The Cavaliers are also going to have to face Westlake in week 5. However, if healthy, they should be able to go on a run to close out the regular season and both they and Arlington Martin will have a good chance at deep playoff runs.
